Research Notes

Second-generation successor to HQ-12

HQ-22 modernizes the HQ-12/KS-1 lineage into a medium-to-long-range SAM system.

HQ-22, exported as FK-3, was developed as a newer Chinese medium-to-long-range air-defence system derived from the HQ-12/KS-1 lineage. It was intended to provide a more modern and affordable layer below the most sophisticated HQ-9 family. The system became notable internationally after export interest and Serbian acquisition of FK-3-class equipment.

Mobile launcher for aircraft and cruise-missile threats

HQ-22 provides a mobile medium-to-long-range battery layer against aircraft and missile threats.

The HQ-22/FK-3 system uses mobile launchers, radar, and command assets to engage aircraft, bombers, precision-strike platforms, and other aerial threats. It is often described as comparable in mission to Patriot-class air defence, though with Chinese-specific architecture and export packaging. Its role is to add depth and redundancy to air-defence networks.

PLA and export relevance

HQ-22/FK-3 broadens China's exportable air-defence family below HQ-9.

HQ-22 is reported in PLA Air Force service and is offered internationally as FK-3. Its service significance is that it broadens China's air-defence portfolio: buyers can choose between lower-cost medium-long-range batteries and higher-end HQ-9 variants. That export ladder increases China's competitiveness in the global SAM market.
