Research Notes

Chinese fighter-bomber and strike aircraft

medium

The JH-7 Flying Leopard is a Chinese twin-engine, two-seat fighter-bomber used for maritime and land-attack missions.

The JH-7, also known as the FBC-1 Flying Leopard, was developed to give Chinese naval and air forces a dedicated strike aircraft. It is better described as a fighter-bomber or strike aircraft than a pure bomber, with a focus on anti-ship and conventional attack missions.

Two-seat strike platform with upgraded JH-7A path

medium

The aircraft combines a tandem crew, twin engines, and hardpoints for anti-ship missiles, bombs, and strike stores.

The JH-7's design reflects a period when China needed greater maritime strike reach and all-weather attack capability. Later JH-7A upgrades improved avionics, cockpit systems, hardpoints, and weapons integration, helping keep the type useful as more advanced aircraft entered service.

Transitional but operationally useful strike aircraft

medium

JH-7 helped bridge older Chinese attack aircraft and newer multirole fighters.

For HiWars, JH-7 is most useful as a transition platform in Chinese airpower development. It shows the move from older, limited strike aircraft toward a more modern precision and anti-ship strike force, even if newer J-16 and J-10 variants now take many high-end missions.
