Overview
November
The November class submarines are diesel-electric vessels known for their stealth, advanced sonar systems, and armament, including torpedoes and missiles, enabling effective underwater operations. With a length of 80 meters and a displacement of 2,600 tons, they support special operations forces and provide comfortable accommodations for the crew, making them suitable for long-duration missions.

Research Notes

First Soviet nuclear-powered attack submarine class

medium

The November class, Soviet Project 627, was the Soviet Union's first operational nuclear-powered attack submarine design. It represented a major transition from diesel-electric submarine operations to sustained submerged endurance and high underwater speed.

Speed and endurance came before quieting maturity

medium

Nuclear propulsion gave the class long submerged endurance and strong speed for its era, but early Soviet reactor, machinery, and acoustic engineering were still immature. That made the boats strategically important while also creating safety, reliability, and noise limitations.

Foundation for later Soviet SSN development

medium

The class established operational experience for Soviet nuclear submarine crews and designers. Later Victor, Alfa, and Akula attack submarines benefited from lessons learned on the November boats, especially in reactor operation, hull design, and under-ice or long-duration patrol practice.
