Overview
Osa
The Project 205 "Moskit" missile boats, or "Osa," were a significant class of Soviet missile boats developed in the late 1950s, with over 400 units produced by 1973. Designed to address the limitations of the earlier Komar-class, the Osa featured a larger steel hull, improved armament including four P-15 Termit missiles, enhanced anti-aircraft capabilities, and a top speed of about 40 knots, making it the most numerous class of missile boats ever built.

Research Notes

Missile Boat for the Littoral Missile Age

The Osa class put anti-ship missiles on small, fast craft for coastal navies.

Project 205 Osa missile boats were developed as the Soviet Navy and export customers embraced small craft armed with guided anti-ship missiles. Rather than building only large surface combatants, Soviet designers made a compact boat that could threaten larger ships near coasts and chokepoints. The class became one of the most numerous missile-boat designs of the Cold War.

Small Hull, Large Missile Punch

Four anti-ship missiles on a fast boat gave the Osa class striking power beyond its size.

The Osa design mounted anti-ship missile launchers, guns, radar, and command equipment on a compact high-speed hull. Its combat value came from salvo attack and coastal concealment rather than endurance or damage resistance. The boat's small size made it affordable and exportable, but also limited seakeeping, survivability, and sensor reach.

Widely Exported Fast Attack Craft

Osa boats served with many Soviet-aligned navies and shaped missile-boat tactics.

Osa-class boats were exported widely and saw service in multiple regional navies, including variants and locally operated fleets in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Their spread helped make anti-ship missiles a routine threat in littoral waters. The class is important because it made small combatants strategically dangerous in confined seas.
