Research Notes

The 5.45 mm squad automatic companion to the AK-74

medium

RPK-74 carried the RPK concept into the small-caliber high-velocity Soviet rifle era.

The RPK-74 was developed as the squad automatic weapon companion to the AK-74 rifle family. As Soviet forces moved from 7.62x39 mm to 5.45x39 mm, the older RPK concept needed a matching support weapon. The result kept the Kalashnikov operating system and magazine-fed logistics while adding a longer, heavier barrel and bipod for controlled automatic fire.

Magazine-fed support fire with strong rifle commonality

medium

The weapon is lighter and simpler than belt-fed machine guns but offers less sustained fire.

Technically, RPK-74 is a gas-operated, magazine-fed light machine gun using 5.45x39 mm ammunition. Its heavy barrel, bipod, longer sight radius, and high-capacity magazines improve fire support compared with a standard rifle. The trade-off is sustainment: it cannot match belt-fed machine guns for continuous fire, but it is lighter, cheaper, and easier to train and maintain within AK-74-equipped units.

A squad automatic weapon shaped by logistics simplicity

medium

RPK-74's operational value is ammunition and parts commonality with the rifle squad.

Operationally, the RPK-74 gives a rifle squad extra automatic fire without introducing a separate belt-fed weapon system. It is useful for patrols, mechanized infantry, and units that value low weight and common magazines. Its limitations become clear in prolonged firefights where barrel heat, magazine changes, and ammunition volume favor belt-fed machine guns. The weapon therefore belongs in the automatic-rifle niche, not the full GPMG category.
