Yulian medium landing ship program

medium

Type 079 was a Chinese medium landing ship developed in the 1970s for simple, quick amphibious production.

The Type 079, NATO reporting name Yulian, was a People's Liberation Army Navy landing ship medium developed during the 1970s. Public histories trace the design work to the 708th Research Institute and construction to Guangzhou Shipyard, with the first ship launched in 1976. The design requirement emphasized a practical ship that could be built quickly and carry useful cargo loads for regional amphibious operations. This matters because China's early amphibious fleet had to cover many coastal and island-support tasks with modest industrial resources. Type 079 therefore represents a utilitarian stage in PLAN amphibious development before larger and more modern landing ships became common.

Vehicle and cargo carrier for short regional movements

medium

The class carried tanks, trucks, troops, or cargo with simple defensive weapons and limited endurance.

The Type 079 was a medium landing ship rather than a high-end combatant. Open references describe a vessel able to carry roughly 200 tons of cargo, including medium tanks or trucks, with a crew-sized hull and simple gun armament. Its design favored beaching or near-shore unloading, short regional movements, and low-cost mass utility. The ship's speed and endurance were modest by warship standards, but adequate for many coastal transport and exercise roles. Its defensive weapons were not intended to let it fight independently in a contested environment; successful use depended on local sea control, escorts, and air cover.

Foundation layer of PLAN amphibious lift

medium

Type 079 ships gave China useful amphibious hull numbers before newer Type 074 and Type 072A classes expanded capacity.

Operationally, the Yulian class helped China maintain amphibious lift capacity for training, logistics, and coastal contingencies. It could move vehicles and troops between ports, support island garrisons, and take part in landing exercises. As newer ships entered service, the Type 079's limitations became more visible: small payload compared with later landing ships, dated defensive systems, and vulnerability in high-threat waters. Its significance is historical and structural. It was one of the practical building blocks that allowed the PLAN to accumulate amphibious operating experience before the more visible modern classes appeared.
