The Type 66 is a Chinese 152 mm towed gun-howitzer derived from the Soviet D-20 design family. It gave the PLA a heavy divisional artillery weapon with local production and ammunition support.
The system provides large-caliber indirect fire for artillery units, trading mobility and protection for range, payload, and relative simplicity. As a towed weapon, it depends on prime movers, prepared positions, and crew drill for survivability.
Type 66 howitzers remained relevant because heavy towed artillery is inexpensive, durable, and easy to sustain compared with self-propelled systems. Its role should be described as conventional fire support, not rocket artillery or missile equipment.
