The Type 92, also known through the WZ551 and ZSL92 designations, is a Chinese 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle family. It provided the People's Liberation Army with a domestic wheeled APC and infantry fighting vehicle platform during the 1990s modernization period.
The Type 92 family can carry infantry, mount machine guns or cannon depending on variant, and support command, reconnaissance, and specialist roles. Its wheeled layout gives better road mobility and lower operating cost than tracked vehicles while retaining basic armor protection.
Type 92 is significant because it helped normalize Chinese wheeled armored formations and became visible in both PLA and export use. It also provided a stepping stone toward later 8x8 designs such as the ZBL-09/VN1 family.
