Chinese gun-missile short-range air defense vehicle
mediumThe PGZ-95 combined rapid-fire 25 mm guns with optional QW-2 missiles for low-altitude air defense.
The Type 95 SPAAA, commonly PGZ-95, was developed to provide Chinese ground forces with a mobile short-range air defense system. It combined self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery with short-range surface-to-air missiles, giving units a way to engage low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and some unmanned threats. The system fits a common late-Cold-War and post-Cold-War pattern: gun systems alone had limited reach, while missiles alone could be expensive or vulnerable to countermeasures. A gun-missile vehicle offered a layered response on a tracked chassis that could accompany maneuver forces.
