Tracked Japanese automatic-weapon air-defence platform

medium

The Type 87 AW entry corresponds to the JGSDF Type 87 twin-35 mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun.

The Type 87 AW represents Japan's domestic tracked gun air-defence system accepted into service in the late 1980s. It was built to accompany armored formations and replace earlier systems that could no longer cope with modern low-level air threats. The program used established Japanese industrial roles, with the chassis related to the Type 74 tank family and the cannon system supplied domestically.

Twin automatic cannon with radar fire control

medium

The system's combat value comes from rapid 35 mm fire and radar-directed engagement of short-range air threats.

The vehicle mounts twin 35 mm cannon, search and tracking sensors, and a fire-control system designed for low-altitude targets. Unlike missile-only systems, a gun SPAAG can engage close and fleeting targets with repeated bursts, although range and altitude coverage are limited. The tracked chassis lets it maneuver with JGSDF ground units.

Short-range protection for maneuver forces

medium

The Type 87 AW protects ground formations from helicopters, attack aircraft, and increasingly relevant drone-type threats.

Operationally, Type 87 AW vehicles provide local air defence around armored columns, command sites, and key ground units. The rise of drones increases interest in rapid-fire gun systems, although effectiveness depends on sensors, ammunition, and command-network integration. It is best used as one layer in a wider air-defence system rather than as a standalone shield.
