Research Notes

Converted wide-body tanker transport

The A310 MRTT converted the civilian A310 airliner into a military tanker, transport, and aeromedical aircraft.

The Airbus A310 MRTT was developed from the A310-300 airliner as a lower-risk way to add air-refueling and strategic transport capacity without designing a new military aircraft. Airforce Technology describes German and Canadian conversions, while Airbus's later A330 MRTT release notes that Canada's new fleet would replace the aging CC-150 Polaris, the Canadian A310 MRTT. The aircraft therefore represents an intermediate generation between dedicated Cold War tankers and the larger A330 MRTT family.

Multi-role cabin and refueling fit

The aircraft combines tanker equipment with passenger, cargo, and medical-evacuation configurations.

The A310 MRTT's strength is its adaptable wide-body airframe. Conversion work added hose-and-drogue refueling equipment and military mission systems while preserving the aircraft's ability to move passengers, freight, or aeromedical modules. This made it valuable for air forces that needed a small fleet to perform several missions. It could refuel receiver aircraft, deploy personnel, carry cargo, and support evacuation tasks, though it carried less fuel and payload than the later A330 MRTT.

Bridge to newer tanker fleets

Germany and Canada used A310 MRTT aircraft as strategic enablers before newer A330-based tankers became the preferred solution.

In service, the A310 MRTT gave medium-sized air forces an important strategic mobility tool. Germany used converted aircraft for tanker and transport missions, while Canada operated the CC-150 Polaris fleet for transport, refueling, and government or military airlift. The aircraft's age eventually drove replacement plans, but its service life proved the usefulness of multi-role tanker transports based on civilian wide-body airframes. The A310 MRTT helped shape the operational logic later embodied in the A330 MRTT: one aircraft type supporting refueling, movement, and medical evacuation.
