Research Notes

German 5.56 mm squad automatic weapon

medium

The MG4, originally developed as the HK43, gave Heckler & Koch a modern light machine gun competitor to the FN Minimi class.

The Heckler & Koch MG4 was developed as a 5.56 x 45 mm belt-fed light machine gun for infantry squad support. Its factory project designation was HK43, and the weapon entered the same broad role as the FN Minimi/M249 family: a portable automatic weapon that could move with rifle squads. The MG4 also reflected Germany's shift toward lighter squad automatic fire alongside heavier 7.62 mm general-purpose machine guns.

Belt-fed light machine gun for squad suppression

medium

The MG4 combines 5.56 mm NATO ammunition, belt feed, quick-change barrel concepts, and infantry portability.

Technically, the MG4 is a belt-fed light machine gun designed for sustained but mobile suppressive fire. It uses 5.56 mm NATO ammunition to keep ammunition weight manageable while providing more continuous fire than individual rifles. The design emphasizes reliability, controllability, field handling, and integration with optics or accessories. It is not meant to replace heavy machine guns or GPMGs, but to provide automatic fire at squad and section level.

Infantry fire-support weapon in Bundeswehr-style doctrine

medium

The MG4 supports maneuver by suppressing targets while remaining lighter than 7.62 mm machine guns.

Operationally, the MG4 gives infantry units a lightweight automatic-fire option for patrols, assaults, and defensive positions. It complements heavier MG3 or MG5-type weapons by trading range and penetration for lower weight and ammunition burden. The weapon is important because it shows the modern split between 5.56 mm squad automatic weapons and 7.62 mm general-purpose guns, each occupying a different fire-support layer.
