Development as a mobile air-surveillance radar

TRML-3D is a HENSOLDT mobile radar family designed for deployable air surveillance and defence.

TRML-3D is part of the German TRML radar family and was developed as a mobile three-dimensional air surveillance and defence radar. HENSOLDT's brochure presents the TRML-3D/32 as a rapidly deployable radar for airspace surveillance, target detection, and air-defence support. It preceded the newer TRML-4D generation but served a similar operational logic: mobile sensors that can accompany forces or protect assets while feeding tracks into command and control systems.

3D radar coverage and mobility

The radar provides mobile 3D air-picture generation for aircraft, helicopter, and missile-warning tasks.

TRML-3D's value lies in producing a three-dimensional air picture from a deployable platform. It can support search, tracking, identification support, and warning functions for air-defence units. Mobility is central: a radar that can relocate is harder to target and can be positioned to cover temporary deployments, critical sites, or moving formations. While newer AESA systems such as TRML-4D offer more advanced performance, TRML-3D remains important as part of the evolution of German mobile air-defence sensors.

Legacy and relationship to TRML-4D

TRML-3D helped establish the mobile radar lineage that later led to more advanced TRML-4D systems.

The TRML-3D is relevant not only as a radar model but as an evolutionary step in HENSOLDT's mobile air-defence sensor portfolio. It demonstrated the demand for deployable radars that can support short- and medium-range air defence without relying solely on fixed installations. That lineage matters because modern air defence increasingly depends on mobile, networked sensors as much as on missile launchers. TRML-3D therefore belongs in the same analytical family as later TRML-4D systems, even if its technology generation is older.
