Research Notes

French tracked IFV for mechanized infantry

The AMX-10P gave French mechanized units a domestic tracked infantry fighting vehicle.

The AMX-10P was developed in France during the 1960s as a replacement for older AMX-VCI armored personnel carriers. It reflected the shift from simple troop carriers toward infantry fighting vehicles that could transport soldiers and support them with an autocannon. Prototypes appeared before production began in the early 1970s, giving the French Army a domestic tracked platform for mechanized regiments during the Cold War.

Amphibious hull with 20 mm support weapon

A light amphibious hull and 20 mm turret made the AMX-10P mobile but lightly protected.

The vehicle used a compact tracked amphibious hull with a rear troop compartment and a one-man turret carrying a 20 mm cannon. It was intended to move with armor, cross water obstacles, and provide suppressive fire against light vehicles and infantry positions. Its protection was limited compared with heavier IFVs, but its mobility, amphibious capability, and family of support variants made it useful across French mechanized formations.

Long French service before VBCI replacement

The AMX-10P served for decades before being replaced in France by the VBCI.

AMX-10P vehicles served for decades with French forces and were exported to several operators. By the 2000s the design was increasingly constrained by protection limits and modernization costs, leading France to replace it with the wheeled VBCI. Its long service life still makes it significant: the AMX-10P was the standard French tracked IFV for much of the late Cold War and post-Cold War period.
