Research Notes

French first-generation naval area-defense missile

Masurca was a French naval surface-to-air missile system developed for major French guided-missile warships. It reflected France's postwar effort to field an indigenous fleet air-defense capability for carrier and surface groups.

Large two-stage missile for shipboard air defense

The system used a sizable missile with booster and sustainer stages, requiring large ships and dedicated handling infrastructure. It provided area-defense reach but was heavy and complex compared with later compact vertical-launch naval missiles.

Important but limited by cost and ship integration

Masurca's deployment was limited because only large, expensive ships could accommodate it. Its history shows the challenge of early naval missile programs: strategic autonomy required large technical and budget commitments.
