Research Notes

Saudi-specific Crotale derivative

medium

Shahine was a Thomson-CSF development of the Crotale short-range air-defence system for Saudi Arabia.

Shahine was created from the French Crotale family after Saudi Arabia requested a more mobile battlefield air-defence system. Thomson-CSF adapted the concept to Saudi requirements, including tracked armored carriers and a different launcher arrangement. The result was a distinctive export derivative rather than a simple standard Crotale purchase.

Tracked short-range SAM with R460 missiles

medium

The system used an improved missile and armored tracked launch vehicles to protect maneuver forces.

Shahine uses the R460 missile, a development of the Crotale R440 missile, with firing and acquisition units designed to operate with armored formations. The tracked AMX-30-based carrier gave it battlefield mobility and protection compared with more static air-defence layouts. Its short-range missile and radar system were intended for low-altitude aircraft and missile threats.

Saudi air-defence service and Gulf War visibility

medium

The system served with Saudi forces and became associated with mobile protection of armored units.

Operationally, Shahine was acquired by Saudi Arabia to defend field forces and key assets against low-altitude threats. Its tracked configuration made it suitable for accompanying armored units, including during Gulf War-era operations. Although its user base was narrow, the system shows how French air-defence technology was tailored for a specific export customer's doctrine.
