Development Context

medium

TRF1 was France's 155 mm towed howitzer developed by GIAT for modern divisional artillery.

The TRF1, originally GIAT 155 mm Tracte, was introduced as a modern French towed artillery system to replace older field guns. It appeared at Eurosatory in the late 1970s and entered French service during the Cold War's final decade. The weapon gave France a NATO-standard 155 mm towed option alongside self-propelled artillery.

Technical Profile

medium

The howitzer uses a 155 mm 39/40-caliber class barrel, split-trail carriage, and auxiliary powered handling features.

TRF1 is a heavy towed howitzer designed for sustained 155 mm fire with a crew-served carriage and relatively fast emplacement compared with older guns. Public profiles describe ranges around the mid-20 km class with standard ammunition and longer reach with extended-range rounds. It remains heavier and slower to displace than truck-mounted systems, but cheaper and simpler than a full self-propelled gun.

Operational Role

medium

TRF1 provides conventional 155 mm fire support where towed artillery remains acceptable.

Operationally, TRF1 supports fire missions, defensive sectors, and expeditionary deployments where a towed gun can be moved by truck. Its renewed visibility in Ukraine-related transfers shows that older but serviceable 155 mm guns can still matter when ammunition compatibility and barrel availability are critical. Its main weakness is survivability under modern counter-battery conditions.
