Research Notes

Light Gun for Rapid Forces

The LG1 was developed for units that needed 105 mm artillery without heavy transport demands.

The 105 LG1 was developed by GIAT, later Nexter and KNDS France, as a modern light towed howitzer for expeditionary and rapid-deployment units. The design answered a niche between older pack howitzers and heavier 155 mm systems: it could be moved by air, truck, or difficult terrain forces while still delivering standard 105 mm fire support. Export demand shaped the program from the start.

Low Weight and High Mobility

The gun emphasizes a lightweight carriage, simple deployment, and compatibility with modern 105 mm ammunition.

The LG1 is marketed around low mass, rapid emplacement, and rugged field handling. Its split-trail carriage, 105 mm barrel, and recoil system are intended to keep the weapon light enough for mobile forces without making it a short-range emergency gun. That balance lets operators use it for airborne, marine, mountain, or light infantry artillery units where logistics weight matters.

Export-Oriented Modern Howitzer

The system has served with several armed forces as a deployable light artillery solution.

The LG1's service history is notable because it remained relevant after many armies shifted their main artillery to 155 mm weapons. Countries that needed lighter expeditionary guns adopted it for rapid reaction forces, island defense, and mobile fire-support roles. Its value is less raw destructive power than the ability to put accurate artillery where heavier systems are difficult to deploy.
