Research Notes

British disposable heavy light anti-armor weapon

LAW 80, known in British service as the Light Anti-armour Weapon 94 mm, was a man-portable disposable anti-tank weapon intended to give infantry a more powerful alternative to earlier light rockets. It combined a launch tube with an integrated spotting rifle concept.

Spotting rifle helped first-round hit probability

A distinctive feature was the 9 mm spotting rifle, allowing the gunner to confirm aim before launching the main rocket. This improved practical accuracy but also added complexity and weight compared with simpler disposable launchers.

Powerful but eventually displaced by newer systems

LAW 80 offered meaningful anti-armor capability for British infantry, but its bulk and the evolution of armored threats limited its long-term role. It was eventually superseded by newer weapons with improved sights, warheads, and confined-space options.
