Research Notes

Autonomous radar-guided maritime strike

After launch, Sea Eagle used programmed flight and active radar terminal homing to search for and attack a ship target. This fire-and-forget approach reduced the attack aircraft's exposure and allowed launches based on onboard sensors, offboard targeting, or pre-briefed maritime search areas. Sea-skimming flight further complicated shipboard detection and interception.

Cold War anti-surface warfare tool

Sea Eagle fits the Cold War requirement to hold Soviet naval groups at risk from maritime strike aircraft. Its effectiveness depended on finding and classifying targets at sea, coordinating attacks, and managing electronic countermeasures. As newer missiles and aircraft entered service, its niche was gradually replaced by more modern anti-surface weapons.
