Helicopter-launched British anti-ship missile

Sea Skua was a British lightweight anti-ship missile designed to let shipborne helicopters attack patrol craft, fast attack craft, corvettes, and frigate-sized targets beyond gun range. Its value came from extending a small helicopter's reach, allowing a surface combatant to threaten ships that its own sensors or guns might not safely engage directly.

Semi-active radar homing from naval helicopters

The missile used semi-active radar homing, normally with the launch helicopter illuminating or supporting the target. This made Sea Skua well suited to coordinated maritime engagements from Lynx-type helicopters, where low-altitude approach, ship radar support, and sea-skimming profiles could compress the target's reaction time.

Small missile optimized for littoral naval targets

Sea Skua was not intended to be a heavy ship-killer against large combatants on its own. Its operational niche was disabling or sinking smaller vessels, attacking exposed sections of larger ships, and forcing defensive reactions. That made it especially useful in confined waters where helicopters could use terrain, sea clutter, and shipborne targeting support.
