Research Notes

British wire-guided missile with unusual launch flexibility

Swingfire was a British wire-guided anti-tank missile developed in the 1960s and used from vehicles and ground launch positions. It became associated with platforms such as the FV102 Striker, giving British units a long-range anti-armor overwatch weapon.

Missile could turn sharply after launch

The name reflected the missile's ability to swing away from the launch direction soon after firing, allowing the operator or launcher to remain offset from the line to the target. This supported concealed firing positions and unusual vehicle-mounted engagements.

Specialized overwatch weapon for the Cold War battlefield

Swingfire suited a doctrine of prepared anti-tank ambushes and overwatch against armored thrusts. Its wire guidance and older electronics made it less flexible than later fire-and-forget missiles, but it remained an important British capability for decades.
