Naval surveillance role

Type 997 Artisan is a medium-range 3D naval radar used to detect and track air and surface contacts for Royal Navy combat systems.

Type 997 Artisan is a rotating 3D surveillance radar fitted to multiple Royal Navy ship classes. Its job is to provide the combat-management system with a recognised air and surface picture, including aircraft, missiles, and small surface targets. Unlike a fire-control radar, Artisan is primarily a volume-search and tracking sensor: it helps the ship understand the tactical environment, cue weapons and electro-optical systems, and share tracks with the wider force.

Why the sensor matters

The system is important because modern escorts need reliable 3D tracking against clutter, jamming, and mixed air-surface threats.

Artisan's value is not only its detection range but its ability to support a stable track picture in a difficult maritime environment. Ships operating near coastlines or in busy sea lanes must separate aircraft, missiles, drones, ships, boats, and environmental clutter. A capable 3D radar lets a frigate or carrier group respond earlier, assign weapons more efficiently, and avoid wasting high-value defensive missiles on poor-quality contacts.

Fleet integration

Artisan appears across several British platforms, making it a common layer in the Royal Navy's sensor ecosystem.

Because the radar is installed on different Royal Navy vessels, it forms a familiar sensor baseline across much of the fleet. That matters operationally: training, maintenance, data interpretation, and combat-system integration become easier when crews and shore support teams work with common equipment. In HiWars equipment pages, Artisan is therefore best read as enabling technology for ships such as frigates and carriers, not as a standalone weapon.
