Overview
Vanguard
The Vanguard class submarines are nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines operated by the Royal Navy, designed to carry and launch Trident II D5 missiles as part of the UK's nuclear deterrence strategy. With advanced technology for stealth, navigation, and communication, they can operate autonomously for extended periods while ensuring crew safety and survivability through features like a double hull design and countermeasures against threats.

Research Notes

Trident-era British ballistic missile submarine

medium

The Vanguard class was built to carry the UK's Trident nuclear deterrent after the Resolution/Polaris generation.

The Vanguard class is the United Kingdom's current operational ballistic missile submarine generation. Built for the Royal Navy's Trident system, the four submarines replaced the older Resolution-class Polaris boats and maintain Britain's continuous at-sea deterrent. The class represents a strategic rather than tactical platform, designed around survivability, endurance, command security, and ballistic missile carriage.

Nuclear-powered SSBN built around Trident II D5

medium

Vanguard boats combine nuclear propulsion, ballistic missile tubes for Trident II D5, torpedo self-defense, sonar, periscopes, and strategic communications.

Technically, Vanguard-class submarines are large nuclear-powered SSBNs. Royal Navy material identifies four boats: Vanguard, Vengeance, Victorious, and Vigilant. Their central payload is the Trident II D5 ballistic missile, supported by navigation, sonar, communications, periscope/optronic systems, and torpedo self-defense. Their design priority is stealthy patrol endurance rather than speed or tactical maneuver as attack submarines use it.

Continuous at-sea deterrent patrols

medium

Vanguard submarines conduct strategic deterrent patrols, with the future Dreadnought class planned as their replacement.

Operationally, Vanguard-class submarines sustain the UK's continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. At least one boat is intended to be on patrol, hidden at sea, providing a survivable second-strike capability. The class will eventually be replaced by the Dreadnought class, but until then Vanguard remains one of the most strategically important assets in the British defense system.
