Overview
Abhay
The Abhay-class corvettes, modified from the Soviet-era Pauk-class, are designed for coastal patrol and anti-submarine warfare, with enhanced capabilities and electronics. As the last of the class is set to be decommissioned by 2025, the Indian Navy is transitioning to newer vessels, having already begun replacing these aging ships with 16 new shallow water anti-submarine ships.

Research Notes

Indian coastal ASW corvette lineage

Abhay represents an older Indian shallow-water ASW corvette generation.

The Abhay class belonged to India's older shallow-water anti-submarine corvette fleet, built around coastal patrol and ASW requirements. Later Indian Navy ASW shallow-water craft programs explicitly reference replacing the ageing Abhay-class vessels. That makes the class important as an older baseline for India's continuing focus on littoral submarine detection and coastal defense.

Small corvette for coastal anti-submarine work

Abhay was a compact coastal ASW corvette class rather than a major surface combatant.

Abhay-class ships were compact corvettes rather than blue-water destroyers or frigates, optimized for coastal anti-submarine patrol and local maritime security. Their size and role reflected the needs of littoral waters, where sonar, patrol endurance, and simple weapons matter more than area air defense. The design sits in the practical middle ground between patrol craft and larger fleet escorts.

Legacy replaced by newer shallow-water craft

Abhay's legacy explains India's ongoing replacement program for coastal ASW vessels.

The class is now most relevant as the equipment generation being replaced by newer Indian ASW shallow-water vessels. Its service story helps readers understand why India is investing in many small ASW ships rather than only large frigates. For HiWars, this turns the Abhay page into useful context for fleet renewal and coastal submarine threats.
