Intermediate-range step beyond Agni-II

Agni-III expanded India's Agni missile family into heavier intermediate-range coverage.

Agni-III was developed by India's DRDO and Advanced Systems Laboratory as a larger intermediate-range ballistic missile for the Strategic Forces Command. It followed the shorter Agni-I and Agni-II systems and pushed India's land-based deterrent toward deeper regional reach. Its testing history, including early failure and later successful firings, shows the normal maturation path from prototype to deployed strategic system.

Two-stage solid-fuel missile with heavy payload

Agni-III combines solid propulsion, heavier payload, and intermediate-range reach.

The missile is described as a two-stage solid-propellant IRBM with a larger diameter and payload than Agni-II. Its public range estimates place it in the 3,000 to 3,500 km class, with road mobility possible and rail mobility associated with deployment concepts. The design gives India a system able to hold more distant strategic targets at risk without moving directly to the Agni-V class.

Regional deterrence role in Strategic Forces Command

Agni-III sits between India's medium-range and longer-range strategic missiles.

Agni-III entered service alongside Agni-II and became part of India's layered nuclear-capable missile force. Its importance comes from filling the range gap between Pakistan-focused systems and longer-range China-facing missiles. For HiWars readers, it helps explain how India's deterrent posture is built from a family of related but differently ranged missiles.
