Shivalik

Shivalik-class frigates represent India's move toward larger indigenous surface combatants with reduced signatures and integrated multi-role combat systems. They were designed for anti-surface, anti-submarine, and air-defence tasks while supporting helicopter operations. The class helped bridge earlier frigate designs and more modern Indian naval programmes.

A Shivalik-class frigate is intended to operate with task groups or independently, using its sensors and weapons to contribute across multiple warfare areas. The helicopter is especially important for anti-submarine reach, while anti-ship missiles and air-defence weapons allow the ship to participate in broader surface combat. Reduced radar signature improves survivability and detection timelines.

For HiWars, Shivalik is valuable as a platform and as an industrial milestone. Modern frigates are integration projects as much as hulls: propulsion, signatures, sensors, weapons, datalinks, and aviation facilities all have to work together. The class strengthened Indian capability in that complex integration work.
