Development history
mediumThe Galil Sniper adapted the rugged Galil rifle family into a 7.62 mm precision-support weapon.
The IMI Galil Sniper, often associated with the Galatz designation, was developed from the Israeli Galil family to provide a semi-automatic precision rifle for military and police marksmen. Rather than creating an entirely new action, IMI used the Galil's proven operating system and strengthened the package around 7.62 mm NATO ammunition, optics, and marksman ergonomics. This made sense for forces already familiar with Galil maintenance and handling. The result was not a dedicated benchrest-style sniper system, but a practical designated-marksman rifle intended to extend squad or unit reach with better accuracy than standard infantry rifles.
