Overview
Micro-Uzi
The Uzi is an Israeli submachine gun and machine pistol designed by Major Uziel Gal in the late 1940s, notable for its telescoping bolt design that allows the magazine to be housed in the pistol grip, resulting in a compact and well-balanced weapon. Adopted by the Israel Defense Forces in 1951, it became widely used and exported, known for its simple construction, ease of maintenance, and high sales in military and law enforcement markets from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Research Notes

Smallest branch of the Uzi family

medium

The Micro-Uzi reduced the already compact Uzi concept into a machine-pistol-sized weapon for close-protection and security roles.

The Micro-Uzi emerged after the original Uzi and Mini-Uzi as an even smaller member of Israel's famous submachine-gun family. It reflected a shift toward compact security weapons for bodyguards, vehicle crews, and special users who needed a weapon smaller than a conventional submachine gun. Like the broader Uzi line, it built on the pistol-grip magazine and compact bolt layout that made the family recognizable.

Machine-pistol-sized 9 mm Uzi derivative

medium

The Micro-Uzi sacrifices steadiness and range for very small size and close-range firepower.

Technically, the Micro-Uzi is a very compact 9 mm automatic weapon with a folding or compact stock arrangement depending on version. Its small size makes it easier to conceal or carry in vehicles, but it also makes control and accurate sustained fire more difficult than with full-sized submachine guns. Its design is a clear example of the tradeoff between portability and shootability in automatic small arms.

Close-protection and special-purpose niche

medium

The Micro-Uzi is most relevant where compactness matters more than range or sustained controllability.

Operationally, the Micro-Uzi fits close-protection, security, and specialist roles rather than conventional infantry use. It can be carried discreetly and brought into action quickly at short range, but it is less suitable for open-field combat or longer engagements. Its significance is that it carried the Uzi brand into the machine-pistol niche and influenced the image of compact Israeli security weapons.
