Research Notes

Next-generation Italian wheeled gun system

Centauro II modernizes the Italian wheeled tank destroyer concept with a 120 mm gun and updated protection.

B1 Centauro II is the modern successor to Italy's original Centauro wheeled gun system. CIO's 2024 release on additional Italian Army vehicles shows the platform's continuing procurement relevance, while Army Recognition describes it as an 8x8 fire-support vehicle with a 120/105 mm weapon concept. The vehicle reflects Italy's preference for fast wheeled armored firepower suited to road movement and expeditionary operations.

120 mm firepower on an 8x8 chassis

The vehicle combines a high-pressure main gun, digital systems, improved armor, and high road mobility.

Centauro II's design updates the classic wheeled tank destroyer formula. A 120 mm gun gives firepower closer to main battle tank standards, while the 8x8 chassis provides strategic and operational mobility. Digital fire-control, improved protection, and modern sights make it more capable than the original Centauro, though it still trades tracked-tank armor for speed, deployability, and lower operating burden.

Fire support for mobile formations

Centauro II supports Italian units that need rapid, road-mobile direct fire without deploying heavier tracked tanks.

In service, Centauro II is designed for reconnaissance, fire support, and anti-armor tasks where wheeled mobility matters. It can move quickly over roads and support medium forces, especially in expeditionary or dispersed scenarios. Its significance is that it keeps the wheeled gun-system concept alive in a period when many armies are rethinking how to combine mobility, firepower, and survivability.
