Multifunction radar family

Selex/Leonardo KRONOS is a family of multifunction AESA radars used for surveillance, fire-control support, and air-defence missions.

KRONOS radars belong to Leonardo's active electronically scanned array radar family. They are designed to detect and track air and surface targets, support air-defence command systems, and provide a modern sensor layer for ships or land-based systems depending on variant. The family is relevant because modern air defence depends on high-quality radar tracks before any missile can be used effectively.

AESA sensor value

AESA technology supports fast beam steering, multi-target tracking, electronic resilience, and flexible mission modes.

Compared with older mechanically steered radars, AESA systems can manage multiple tasks more flexibly: search, track, update, and support engagements. For naval and ground air defence, that means better reaction time against aircraft, missiles, and drones. KRONOS variants are therefore enabling systems rather than weapons in themselves.

Why it matters

KRONOS shows how radar families are adapted across land and naval missions to create common sensor technology.

In a database focused on conflicts and equipment, sensors can be easy to under-value. KRONOS matters because it shapes what commanders can see and how quickly they can respond. Its family approach also shows how defence companies reuse radar modules and architecture across several platforms.
