Italian ground-based air-defence missile system

medium

Spada was developed as an all-weather system to defend air bases and important sites.

The Spada air-defence system was developed in Italy around the Aspide missile family to provide ground-based point and area defence for air bases, troop concentrations, and critical facilities. Later Spada 2000 upgrades improved automation and engagement performance. The system was used by Italy and exported to several foreign customers.

Aspide-based SAM battery with radar and command elements

medium

A Spada battery combines launchers, missiles, radar, fire-control, and command equipment for medium-short range defence.

Technically, Spada is a surface-to-air missile system rather than a single missile round. It uses Aspide-derived missiles with battery-level sensors and fire-control equipment. Its strength is fixed-site or semi-mobile defence in all-weather conditions; its limitations are mobility, missile generation, and survivability against modern stand-off and saturation attacks unless networked with wider defences.

Air-base and critical-site protection

medium

Spada protects fixed or semi-fixed sites from aircraft and some missile threats as part of layered air defence.

Operationally, Spada batteries are used to defend air bases, infrastructure, and troop areas where continuous air-defence coverage is needed. They work best as one layer among fighters, long-range SAMs, short-range systems, and command networks. The system's relevance depends on upgrade state, missile stock condition, and integration with current air surveillance.
