Japanese fixed 3D air-surveillance radar

medium

J/FPS-3 is a Japanese ground-based air-defense radar family used by the JASDF.

J/FPS-3 is a Japanese fixed 3D air-surveillance radar associated with Japan's nationwide air-defense sensor network. Mitsubishi Electric describes the newer FPS-3ME as an improved version of the J/FPS-3, which had been in use by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force for more than 30 years. ATLA equipment material identifies the J/FPS-3 as a fixed 3D air-surveillance radar.

Fixed radar for persistent airspace coverage

medium

The system is built for long-duration surveillance rather than mobile battlefield deployment.

A fixed air-surveillance radar is part of an integrated air-defense architecture: it detects, tracks, and feeds data to command centers and interceptors. J/FPS-3 and its successors emphasize reliable long-range surveillance, digital processing, and upgrade paths such as ballistic-missile-defense modes in later systems. It should be understood as infrastructure, not a standalone weapon.

Sensor backbone for island air defense

medium

Japan's geography makes persistent radar coverage central to warning time and air-defense coordination.

For Japan, fixed radar sites are strategically important because air and missile threats can approach across maritime spaces. J/FPS-3-type sensors support early warning, air policing, interceptor direction, and data fusion. Their vulnerability is that fixed sites must be protected and networked, but their value is that they provide persistent coverage that mobile sensors alone cannot match.
