Domestic Japanese general-purpose machine gun
mediumThe Type 62 gave the Self-Defense Forces a Japanese-built 7.62 mm support weapon.
The Sumitomo Type 62, also known as the NTK-62, was developed after Japan re-established a domestic defence industry for the Self-Defense Forces. It replaced or supplemented earlier U.S.-supplied machine guns and served as a national general-purpose machine gun for infantry and vehicle use. The weapon's long service life reflects both domestic supportability and the difficulty of replacing a standard support weapon across a large force.
