Short-range air defence

Type 11 Tan-SAM is a Japanese short-range surface-to-air missile system for point and manoeuvre-force defence.

Type 11 Tan-SAM, also known as Tan-SAM Kai II, is part of Japan's short-range ground-based air-defence layer. It protects troops, bases, and key assets against nearby aerial threats. Short-range systems are especially important against helicopters, low-flying aircraft, drones, and cruise-missile-like targets that may appear with little warning.

Mobile point defence

The system's value is rapid reaction and mobility rather than long-range coverage.

Short-range air defence has to move with or near the assets it protects. Type 11 gives local commanders a mobile response to low-altitude air threats, complementing larger systems that cover wider areas. In a layered network, these systems help close gaps that long-range radars and interceptors may not handle efficiently.

Modern relevance

The system matters because drones and low-cost aerial threats make short-range defence more important again.

Recent conflicts have shown that short-range air defence is not a niche capability. Small UAVs, loitering munitions, helicopters, and low-flying missiles all create pressure on local units. Type 11 helps illustrate Japan's need for deployable protection below the strategic missile-defence layer.
