The Type 81 Tan-SAM is a Japanese short-range surface-to-air missile system developed for the Self-Defense Forces. It uses mobile launcher and fire-control elements to defend air bases, important sites, and maneuver forces against aircraft threats.
The system is based on mobile launch vehicles and short-range interceptors, giving Japan a domestic point-defense layer below larger Patriot and medium-range systems. Later Tan-SAM Kai improvements upgraded guidance and engagement flexibility.
Type 81 is important because it established a Japanese mobile SAM line that later evolved into Type 11 and complemented Type 03 Chu-SAM. It demonstrates Japan's long-running effort to maintain domestic control over key air-defense technologies.
