Research Notes

Japanese replacement for older gun air defence

medium

The Type 87 SPAAG was accepted in 1987 to modernize JGSDF mobile short-range air defence.

The Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun was developed for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force as a modern tracked gun air-defence system. It replaced older systems and followed the same broad concept as vehicles such as the Gepard: radar-directed twin automatic cannon on a tank-derived chassis. Mitsubishi provided the chassis while Japan Steel Works provided the gun system.

Twin 35 mm radar-directed SPAAG

medium

The vehicle combines a Type 74 tank-based chassis with twin 35 mm cannon and search/fire-control radar.

Technically, the Type 87 uses twin 35 mm Oerlikon-type cannon for short-range air defence against aircraft and helicopters. Radar and fire-control systems allow target detection and engagement while the tracked chassis provides mobility with armored formations. Gun systems like this offer fast reaction and low engagement cost per burst, but have shorter reach than missile air-defence systems.

Mobile low-altitude defence for JGSDF formations

medium

The Type 87 protects ground units against helicopters, low-flying aircraft, and some light ground threats.

Operationally, the Type 87 supports armored and mechanized units by defending them from low-altitude air threats. It can also engage lightly protected ground targets in emergencies, but air defence is its primary role. Its modern relevance depends on radar survivability, integration with missile systems, and ability to respond to drones as well as traditional aircraft.
