Imperial Japanese heavy infantry mortar

medium

The Type 97 150 mm mortar was a World War II heavy mortar for high-angle fire support.

The Type 97 mortar refers to a Japanese 150 mm infantry mortar used during the World War II era. Heavy mortars gave infantry formations a way to deliver large explosive projectiles from high angles against defiladed positions, strongpoints, and troop concentrations. The Type 97 followed Japanese experimentation with large infantry mortars during the interwar and early wartime period.

Large-calibre muzzle-loading mortar

medium

The weapon emphasized explosive payload over mobility, requiring crew effort and prepared firing positions.

Technically, a 150 mm infantry mortar is a heavy crew-served weapon with a large projectile and relatively short range compared with field artillery. Its high-angle trajectory made it useful against trenches, bunkers, and terrain-masked targets. The tradeoff was weight: movement, ammunition supply, and emplacement demanded more effort than smaller 81 mm or 90 mm mortars.

Heavy close support in static or semi-static fighting

medium

The Type 97 was most useful where infantry needed heavy explosive fire without full artillery support.

Operationally, the Type 97 mortar would support assaults, defensive positions, and jungle or island fighting where high-angle fire was valuable. Its large bomb could damage fieldworks and suppress troops, but mobility and logistics limited rapid redeployment. It illustrates the Japanese Army's reliance on infantry-support weapons in environments where conventional artillery movement was difficult.
