Research Notes

Korean first-generation submarine force

Chang Bogo is South Korea's Type 209-derived diesel-electric submarine class and the foundation of the ROKN submarine arm.

The Chang Bogo class, also known as Jang Bogo or KSS-I, gave the Republic of Korea Navy its first modern operational submarine force. Based on the German Type 209 design, the class provided South Korea with practical experience in submarine operations, maintenance, crew training, and later local upgrade work. It remains important as the starting point for the country's later KSS-II and KSS-III undersea programmes.

Coastal sea-denial platform

The boats are designed for stealthy patrol, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine missions, and intelligence gathering in regional waters.

Diesel-electric submarines are valuable in confined seas because they can operate quietly and impose uncertainty on surface forces. Chang Bogo-class boats can patrol approaches, monitor shipping, and threaten hostile naval units with torpedoes or other weapons depending on configuration. Their military value comes from being difficult to locate before they influence an opponent's behaviour.

Industrial legacy

The class matters because it helped Korea move from operating imported designs toward building indigenous submarines.

For HiWars, Chang Bogo is useful as a baseline for South Korean naval modernisation. The operational and industrial lessons from this class fed into more ambitious programmes, culminating in larger Korean-designed submarines with more advanced combat systems and strike roles.
