Gumdoksuri
The Yoon Youngha-class patrol vessels, comprising the larger PKX-A missile patrol ship and the smaller PKX-B patrol boat, were developed by the Republic of Korea Navy to modernize its fleet following a naval clash with North Korea in 2002. The PKX-A, displacing around 500 tons, is designed to replace Pohang-class corvettes, while the PKX-B, weighing approximately 200 tons and armed with a 130 mm guided rocket launcher, aims to counter North Korean fast attack crafts.

Research Notes

Missile patrol vessel

Gumdoksuri is a South Korean fast patrol combatant class developed for littoral defence and Northern Limit Line contingencies.

The Gumdoksuri or Yoon Youngha-class patrol vessels were developed to replace older patrol boats and improve the Republic of Korea Navy's response in contested coastal waters. They are smaller than frigates but carry meaningful firepower for fast reaction missions, especially in the Yellow Sea and near the Northern Limit Line.

Fast littoral firepower

The class combines speed, sensors, guns, and missiles to counter small surface threats quickly.

Fast patrol vessels are most useful when a navy needs rapid response in crowded coastal waters. Gumdoksuri-class ships can intercept hostile patrol craft, protect local sea lanes, and deliver more firepower than legacy patrol boats. Their design reflects lessons from naval clashes around Korea's western maritime boundary.

Why it matters

The class matters because Korea's naval threat is not only blue-water warfare but frequent low-level coastal confrontation.

For HiWars, Gumdoksuri helps represent the day-to-day edge of Korean maritime security. Small combatants can be strategically important when they patrol disputed waters, respond to incidents, and deter escalation at close range.
