Research Notes

FFX coastal defence frigate

The Incheon class is South Korea's first FFX frigate class, replacing older coastal escorts with modern sensors and weapons.

The Incheon-class frigates were developed as part of the Future Frigate eXperimental programme to modernise the Republic of Korea Navy's coastal defence force. They replaced older Ulsan-class frigates and Pohang-class corvettes with more capable ships suited to patrol, escort, anti-surface, and limited anti-submarine missions.

Modern frigate baseline

The class carries a main gun, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, sensors, and helicopter facilities for coastal and regional missions.

Incheon-class ships are not as large as Korea's destroyers, but they provide a modern frigate layer for patrol and escort work. Their combat systems and sensors improve reaction time and situational awareness compared with earlier coastal combatants. The class became the first batch in a broader FFX frigate evolution.

Fleet renewal role

Incheon matters because it marks the replacement of aging Cold War-era Korean coastal ships with modern frigates.

For HiWars, Incheon-class frigates help explain how navies modernise the middle of the fleet. Not every mission requires an Aegis destroyer; frigates provide persistent coverage, escort capacity, and maritime security presence at lower cost.
