Jacob Van Heemskerck
The Jacob Van Heemskerck-class frigate, an air defense platform of the Royal Netherlands Navy, was designed from the Kortenaer class with enhanced anti-air capabilities and a robust missile defense system. Comprising two ships transferred to the Chilean Navy in 2005, they featured a COGAG propulsion system, various missile launchers, and advanced radar systems, with later upgrades improving their operational effectiveness.

Research Notes

Dutch L-frigate optimized for air defense

medium

The Jacob van Heemskerck class was a two-ship Royal Netherlands Navy frigate class derived from the Kortenaer hull but optimized for air-defense duties. The ships were built to compensate for the cancellation of Tromp follow-on air-defense ships and gave the Netherlands a compact guided-missile escort for NATO task groups.

Kortenaer derivative with Standard Missile air-defense fit

medium

The class traded the helicopter facilities of the Kortenaer design for additional air-defense systems, including Standard missiles and supporting radar. That made the ships specialized escorts rather than general-purpose frigates. Their design illustrates how navies adapted proven hulls to fill urgent missile-defense gaps.
