Research Notes

Dutch M-class multipurpose frigate

The Karel Doorman class, also known as the Dutch M-class frigate, was built as a multipurpose escort for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ships were designed for anti-submarine, anti-surface, and limited air-defense tasks, offering a balanced frigate capability for NATO operations and national maritime security.

Balanced escort weapons and sensors

The class carries a medium naval gun, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, sensors, and helicopter facilities. This combination made the ships useful as general-purpose escorts, especially in coalition operations where a frigate may need to switch between patrol, submarine screening, and surface surveillance.

Exported second-life frigate design

Several Karel Doorman-class ships were later transferred to Belgium, Chile, and Portugal, extending the design's service life across multiple navies. That second-life export pattern shows how capable mid-sized frigates can remain valuable after modernization, particularly for navies that need credible escorts without building new ships immediately.
