Development History

medium

Topol-M was Russia's first major post-Soviet ICBM, developed from the mobile Topol lineage.

RT-2PM2 Topol-M, NATO designation SS-27 Mod 1, was developed from late Soviet Topol work but redesigned after 1992 as one of the first strategic missiles built by the Russian Federation. CSIS notes that early silo deployments began in the late 1990s, followed by road-mobile versions in the 2000s. The program helped Russia preserve a modern solid-fuel ICBM base after the Soviet breakup disrupted production chains and budgets. Its development also led into the RS-24 Yars family, which expanded the basic design direction toward MIRV-capable systems.

Technical Profile

medium

The missile is a three-stage solid-propellant ICBM deployed in silo and road-mobile forms.

Topol-M is a three-stage, solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile with both silo-based and road-mobile basing modes. Public estimates give it an intercontinental range around 11,000 km and a single nuclear warhead payload for the Mod 1 configuration. Solid fuel supports long-term storage and faster launch readiness, while mobile TEL basing improves dispersal compared with fixed silos. The missile is also associated with countermeasures and maneuvering reentry-vehicle claims intended to reduce vulnerability to missile defenses. It is a strategic nuclear system, not a battlefield ballistic missile.

Operational Use

medium

Topol-M supports Russia's strategic rocket forces in both hardened-silo and mobile-launch roles.

Operationally, Topol-M contributes to Russia's land-based nuclear deterrent. Silo missiles provide hardened fixed launch capacity, while road-mobile launchers complicate adversary targeting and improve survivability if dispersed. The system also served as a bridge between older Soviet ICBMs and newer Yars deployments. Its operational importance is therefore twofold: it sustained Russia's strategic forces during a difficult modernization period and established a solid-fuel design path for later Russian mobile ICBMs.
