2S19M2 Msta-S

The 2S19M2 Msta-S is a modernized version of the Soviet/Russian 2S19 152 mm self-propelled howitzer lineage. The baseline Msta-S entered Russian service in 1989 as a successor to older 2S3 Akatsiya systems, while later upgrades improved fire control, rate of fire, navigation, and crew workflow. The M2 variant represents Russia's attempt to keep a large existing artillery fleet relevant.

Msta-S combines a tracked chassis, turreted 152 mm gun, armored crew protection, and onboard ammunition handling. The M2 modernization is associated with automated fire-control improvements and faster mission execution compared with early vehicles. It remains a conventional heavy tracked self-propelled gun rather than the more radical automated design claimed for 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV.

Msta-S variants are among the most important Russian self-propelled artillery systems in high-intensity warfare. Their use in Ukraine highlights the continued centrality of tube artillery, counter-battery fire, drone spotting, and ammunition supply.
