Overview
2S25 Sprut
The 2S25 Sprut-SD is a lightweight, amphibious combat vehicle designed for Russia's airborne troops, featuring a 125 mm smoothbore gun and air-droppable capability. Despite its innovative design and limited production of 24-36 units, it has not seen combat and has been overshadowed by the more versatile BMD-4M, though India is exploring a customized version for high-altitude warfare.

Research Notes

Airborne Anti-Tank Firepower

Sprut-SD was designed to give Russian airborne units tank-level gun power in a lightweight vehicle.

The 2S25 Sprut-SD was developed for Russian airborne forces that needed a vehicle light enough for air transport and parachute delivery but armed strongly enough to engage armored targets. It answered a long-standing problem for airborne troops: light armored vehicles are mobile but usually lack the gun power of a main battle tank. Sprut-SD tried to bridge that gap.

125 mm Gun on a Light Amphibious Chassis

The vehicle carries a tank-style smoothbore gun while remaining amphibious and air deployable.

Sprut-SD mounts a 125 mm smoothbore gun compatible with Russian tank ammunition on a lightweight tracked chassis. It is amphibious, uses water jets, and sacrifices heavy armor for mobility and deployability. That makes it better understood as a self-propelled anti-tank gun for airborne forces than as a true main battle tank.

Specialized VDV Capability

The system remains a niche vehicle for forces that value deployability over protection.

Sprut-SD has been associated primarily with Russian airborne and rapid-deployment formations. Its appeal is obvious for expeditionary or river-crossing missions, but its light armor limits how it can be used against modern anti-armor threats. The vehicle's significance lies in the unusual combination of airborne mobility, amphibious movement, and full-caliber anti-tank fire.
