Research Notes

Super-Heavy Mortar Carrier

The 2S4 was built to put a 240 mm siege mortar on a mobile tracked chassis.

The 2S4 Tyulpan carried forward Soviet interest in very heavy mortars for destroying fortified positions and urban strongpoints. Instead of keeping the 240 mm M-240 as a purely towed weapon, designers placed a related mortar system on a tracked chassis. This gave Soviet forces a specialized weapon for targets too hard or sheltered for ordinary field artillery.

240 mm Rear-Firing Mortar

The vehicle carries a very large mortar that is lowered behind the chassis for firing.

Tyulpan's mortar is mounted externally and deployed to the rear, where the baseplate transfers firing loads to the ground. The vehicle carries limited ammunition because each 240 mm round is extremely large, and loading depends on mechanical assistance. Its size, slow rate of fire, and logistics burden are offset by unusual destructive effect against bunkers, buildings, and field fortifications.

Specialized Siege Firepower

The 2S4 has appeared in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Syria-related reporting, and Ukraine-era fighting.

The 2S4 saw service in Soviet and Russian operations where heavy high-angle fire could reach protected or urban targets. It is too specialized to replace ordinary howitzers, but few systems can match its payload. Modern appearances of the Tyulpan underline how older heavy artillery remains relevant when armies face fortified urban or trench systems.
