Research Notes

Russia's post-Soviet blue-water frigate class

Project 22350 is Russia's key modern frigate program after the Soviet era.

The Admiral Gorshkov class, or Project 22350, was developed as a modern multipurpose frigate for the Russian Navy after the post-Soviet decline in large surface combatant construction. The class is built by Severnaya Verf and associated with Severnoye design work. Its development has been closely watched because it represents Russia's effort to rebuild modern ocean-going surface combatant capability.

Multipurpose frigate with missile-centered armament

Gorshkov-class ships package modern sensors and strike missiles into frigate hulls.

The class combines stealth shaping, modern sensors, naval air defense, anti-ship and land-attack missile capacity, anti-submarine systems, and a medium naval gun. It is smaller than a destroyer but intended to perform many high-end surface-combat missions. The design reflects Russia's preference for heavily armed ships that can carry long-range strike missiles from a frigate-sized hull.

Modernization flagship with production constraints

The class is both a modernization symbol and a case study in Russian shipbuilding limits.

The lead ship Admiral Gorshkov entered Russian Navy service after a long test period, and later ships have followed slowly. The class is strategically significant because it carries modern missiles and serves as a visible symbol of naval modernization, but its production pace also reveals the difficulty of rebuilding complex warship output. A richer page helps readers connect hardware, shipbuilding, and Russian naval strategy.
