Research Notes

Soviet naval helicopter replacing the Ka-25 Hormone

medium

The Kamov Ka-27, NATO reporting name Helix, was developed for the Soviet Navy as a shipborne anti-submarine and utility helicopter. It replaced the older Ka-25 and used Kamov's coaxial rotor layout to fit naval deck and hangar constraints. The family later produced search-and-rescue, transport, and export variants.

Coaxial shipboard helicopter suited to ASW sensors and weapons

medium

The Ka-27's coaxial rotors remove the need for a tail rotor, reducing footprint on ship decks and improving handling in maritime conditions. ASW versions carry dipping sonar, sonobuoys, radar, torpedoes, and depth charges depending on fit. This made the helicopter a major extension of Soviet shipboard submarine-hunting capability.

Long-lived naval helicopter across Russian and export fleets

medium

Ka-27 variants served with Russia, Ukraine, India, China, Vietnam, and other operators. The type remains important because it supports many Soviet/Russian-designed surface ships that rely on onboard helicopters for ASW reach and maritime surveillance.
