Research Notes

Kamov's conventional utility-helicopter departure

medium

The Ka-60 was unusual for Kamov because it used a conventional main rotor and tail rotor rather than the bureau's signature coaxial layout.

The Kamov Ka-60 Kasatka was developed as a medium utility helicopter for Russian military and state users. It is historically interesting because Kamov is strongly associated with coaxial rotor designs, while the Ka-60 used a more conventional layout with a main rotor and tail rotor. The program was intended to cover missions such as transport, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, training, and special support, but development difficulties limited its operational maturity.

Medium twin-turbine transport and reconnaissance platform

medium

The design targeted a 16-seat utility class with mission variants for training, transport, reconnaissance, and shipborne support.

Technically, the Ka-60 is a twin-engine medium helicopter with a streamlined fuselage, side cabin access, retractable landing gear, and a mission set between light utility and larger transport aircraft. Proposed variants included training, utility, shipborne targeting support, reconnaissance, electronic-warfare, and anti-armor concepts. Its technical significance is not mass production, but the attempt to create a modern Russian utility platform outside the Mi-8/17 family.

Limited service impact but important design bridge

medium

The Ka-60 did not become a major fleet aircraft, but it influenced the Ka-62 civil derivative and showed Kamov's attempt to enter a broader utility market.

Operationally, the Ka-60 remained limited compared with established Russian helicopter families. Its planned roles were real, but fleet adoption was constrained by funding, development delays, and competition from proven Mil designs. Even so, the type deserves richer content because it represents a design bridge: a Kamov utility helicopter aimed at reconnaissance and transport missions, with later influence on the Ka-62 civilian program.
